the life time of a mattress set?

I bought my mattress & box spring set 4 yr.s ago, I was talking to a sales person as to what I could put ontop to soften it,,, I already have a pillow top 3″ thick,, he proceeded to tell me that really most mattress’ are no good after five to seven yr.s,,,,,,,maybe I should invest in a newer set… I don’t weigh out at over 160lbs.,I flip the mattress ,,,It dont have any impressions in it..,,I just wanted to make it alil’ softer,,,,,, My question here is ,,, how long does a normal person,or any type person, keep a bedding set ,,,??
